Meghan Healy is 24 years old originally comes from Monaghan in Ireland. She studied Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology at the University College Dublin graduating with a 2.1. She began riding in her early years and grew up alongside a very sporty and competitive family who always supported and encouraged her interest in Eventing.
“I learned a great deal from my wider sporting education from the importance of nutrition, psychology, personal fitness and flexibility, elements that often get pushed to the wayside in equestrian sport as the horse is the primary concern.”
Her education in these elements of elite sport are all key to her growing success as an international event rider. Her equestrian career started off in the show ring were she competed at Royal Dublin Horse Show on several occasions. Meghan now has experience in a number of equestrian disciplines including competing on the national showjumping to grade A level and competing at the RDS and the national championships. Meghan then made the leap to the Eventing circuit when she began to train alongside Becky and Declan Cullen. Here is where her passion for Eventing blossomed, she placed at every event from Introductory level to Novice level in just one season and competed at the Pony Championships in Ballindenisk.
From here Meghan made her transition from ponies to horses and began two wonderful partners in Moyglas Mister Blue and Native Alex. Blue was the beginning of Meghan’s association with Tiny Clapham, as she had produced him as a young horse. They carried onto the CCIJ* at Necarne Castle finishing third and then to the senior CIC* with him in her second year of juniors at Ballindenisk where she placed fifth.
In 2012 she arrived in England at Tiny Clapham’s yard, planning only to stay for a month but ended up staying for the whole summer, learning a huge amount from a riding perspective but also about the management of top-class event horses. She experienced the competition circuit available to riders in the UK, which was vast compared to what was available in Ireland. After returning to Ireland to finish her degree, Meghan made the decision to base herself with Tiny in the UK in order to continue developing her Eventing career. Together, Tiny and Meghan sourced her current partner in crime Lui D, who, 4 years on have produced countless placings and titles together and this season are aiming at their first CCI*** at the end of this season. Alongside Lui D, Meghan has continued to produce young, talented event horses adding to her long list of incredible successes for such a young rider, with the help, guidance and devoted support of coach and mentor, Tiny. This season, Meghan has also been producing a string of quality young horses including; Ozzies Gem, Mr Sneezy, First Date II and Merlough Bay.
Meghan is in the process of taking the necessary steps to fulfilling her ultimate ambition of becoming an established international rider whilst running a successful business in producing and catering for top quality horses of all ages.
